Social dancing for health benefits
It is probably the case that not many people know about the strong Tango Community that exists in South Wales.
People will likely know about the connections Wales has with Patagonia and the hundreds of Welsh that emigrated there in the 19th century, but here in Wales, for over twenty years dance enthusiasts have embraced an Argentinian cultural gem, the Tango dance. They have established a thriving community of tango dancers, known as tangueros (male) and tangueras (female), in various towns across South Wales. These communities across Wales dance the true and traditional form of the tango dance, which originated in the port area of Buenos Aires and which incidentally, is not what is see on TV shows. TV shows portray it as something seductive but it is not, it is a dance of the soul.
There are eight locations currently active in Wales that welcome complete beginners. Young adults through to seniors are most welcome to join in. Current members’ ages range from, early twenties through to those oldest members who are in their eighties. You don’t need to have had any previous dance experience, and you don’t need to have a dance partner to accompany you.
Group teachers would be particularly delighted to see young people 16+ make enquiries to join, as this is how they build a legacy for the future.
Here’s the best bit about dancing: it has been acknowledged by medical professionals that belonging to a social community has huge benefits for all people of any age, and you may not know that it is also recorded by experts in the field, that it can assist people who suffer with PTSD, depression, and also those with Parkinsons Disease. Dancing improves general health too, especially in those individuals who feel lonely and isolated: it is due to all those darling little endorphins that circulate in the blood stream producing oxytocin, the happiness hormone.
